About Bergen

Bergen, which is tied to the Hordaland municipality, is a city located on the west coast of Norway. After Oslo it is the second largest city and was founded by King Olav Kyrre. Fishery, the oil industry, television industry and tourism are quite advanced in the city. As it is geographically located on the coastal region there is a significant amount of rainfall, averaging around 2,250 mm a year. The Gulf Stream affects the temperature. The Hanseatic wooden houses, Fantoft Stave Church, Troldhaugen (composer Edvard Grieg’s old house), Bergen Aquarium, and Floyen Mountain are among the city’s most visited places.

Due to its coastal location the city has an advanced fishing industry, which is also reflected in its cuisine. Restaurants offer menus from all around the world as well as conventional Norwegian flavors. Some of the most popular dishes are the deer kebab, smoked salmon, and Bergen fish soup.

Bergen has a very vibrant nightlife, home to Northern Europe’s oldest known rock bar. There are many nightclubs and live music venues located in the city center and the city hosts many events throughout the year. The Hole in the Sky Metal, held in August, and the Rock Music Festival attract a fairly large amount of people. The Nattjazz Festival brings jazz music lovers together. The Fish and Flower markets in the city are among the most popular outdoor markets. For shopping centers in the city Xhibition, Oleana, and Galleriet are the most preferred.  Reaching the city from the Bergen Airport, Flesland, located on the coast, is quite easy.
