About Caracas

Caracas is the crowded capital city of Venezuela, nestled in a valley sandwiched between two large mountains. This city of 5 million is well known for its coffee, cocoa and leather exports, and gasoline prices are also significantly cheap.

One of the first things visitors to Caracas should do is ride the teleferico, a gondola lift that provides sweeping views of not only the city but also the lush forests blanketing the surrounding hills. In Caracas the old colonial district, Colonia Tovar, Plaza Sucre, Chacohia, Parque Central, and San Francisco Church and Miranda Park are all major sights to visit. If you are interested in hiking or trekking, you can also participate in walking and hiking tours on the nearby El Avila Mountain.

The crime rate in Caracas is high, so it is not recommended to walk around outside the tourist areas, and especially not alone at night. The tropical climate prevails here, where the highest temperatures occur in June and July. It is rainy all year but is slightly cooler in the summer.  For eating and drinking you can find easily both Latin cuisine and an abundance of seafood. For security reasons you may prefer to take a taxi to access the city center from the airport.
