About Djerba

Djerba is an island located in the Gulf of Gabes in Tunisia and is one of the most important tourism centers in the country with a population of approximately 170 thousand people. Djerba, also known for the Djerba Sea Battle, is the largest island of North Africa. The island is mostly visited and considered as a holiday destination by European tourists. The local economy is based on agricultural commerce and tourism.

While the vast majority of the island’s population is composed of Muslims, Jewish minorities continue to live here. The fact that Jews living in the island migrated to Israel and France in recent years reduced the Jewish population here. The El Gariba Synagogue in the island is also known as the oldest synagogue built in the world. Although short-term precipitation can be seen during the transitional periods of hot climates throughout the year, the weather is usually hot and sultry. Especially if you are planning to visit the island in the summer months, it is worthwhile to take thin clothes with you. Zarzis Airport, which connects the island to the world, is serving the flights which are concentrated especially in summer.
