About Egilsstadir

Egilsstaðir is located on the banks of the Lagarfljót River in the east of Iceland. Additionally, Egilsstaðir is the biggest city in the Eastern region and has a population of approximately 2260 people according to the data of 2011. Being incredibly young, the city is one of the places with a tendency for urbanization in the European continent. The city was established in 1947 and named after the Egilsstaðir Farm in the vicinity of the bridge in Lagarfljót. Having become a center of main service, transportation and administration, the city is not the biggest city of the Eastern Iceland.

There is an airport, a collage and a hospital in the city. It started to expand with the economic explosion between 2004 and 2008, and lost its speed in expansion with the collapses in banks in 2008. Among the must-see places in the city are Eidar longwave transmitter, Kárahnjúkar Hydropower Plant, Hallormsstaðaskógur, the biggest forest of Iceland, Hengifoss Waterfall in Fljótsdalshreppur, the author Gunnar Gunnarsson’s Skriðuklaustur Farmstead and Öxi Mountain.
