Located between Lithuania and Poland, on the coast of the Baltic Sea, Kaliningrad is a Russian exclave, a city connected to Russia but not actually within Russia’s borders. Therefore the mother tongue in this city is Russian. Considering that fact, we recommend taking a Russian language book with you. This port city is closer to Europe, unlike other Russian cities. This environmentally friendly city has clean air and wonderful greenery. Due to its location on the shores of the Baltic Sea, fish soup is one of the most popular dishes. You can walk from one side of the city to the other in about 1-2 hours. The city was seriously damaged throughout World War II but several historic buildings have survived.

Places to see in Kaliningrad include the unusual Rosgartener Gate, Königsberg Cathedral, the beautiful neo-Gothic style Church of the Holy Family, the Museum of the World Ocean, which displays interesting pieces related to maritime history, B-413 Submarine Museum, Fisherman’s Village, where you can enjoy nice walks along the river, the Kaliningrad Regional Philharmonic Hall, which is a great venue to listen to music thanks to its wonderful acoustics, the Botanical Garden, a revitalizing place with its fresh air and lush greenery,  the church Juditen, a former religious building, Holy Cross Cathedral, Kaliningrad Zoo, King's Gates Museum, Fridrikhsburgskiye Gate Museum, and the Upside Down House. Let’s not forget Pregolya Bridge, also referred to as Lovers Bridge since it is filled with lovers’ padlocks. Visit Kant Island where the Königsberg Cathedral is located, as well as other sites worth visiting like the Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University and famous philosopher Immanuel Kant’s grave. Amber is one of the largest natural resources in Kaliningrad, making it one of the unofficial symbols of the region.

If you want to learn more about amber we suggest visiting the Kaliningrad Amber Museum. The Khrabrovo Airport is located 24 km north of the city and only serves domestic flights. Therefore, you have to have a layover in order to reach the city by air. You can book a connecting flight from Moscow or Saint Petersburg.
