About Machu Picchu

One of the 7 Wonders of the World, Machu Picchu is an ancient city that is still remarkably well preserved. First founded by the Inca Pachacuti in the year 1450, it is located 88 km from the modern city of Cusco in Peru, at an altitude of 2,360 meters. Located on a peak of one of the Andes Mountains, this ancient city is one of the most visited places in South America.

Machu Picchu was interconnected with a system of over 200 stone staircases, comprising over 3,000 steps and still in existence today. Combining history with stunning natural views, the popularity of these ruins, which sees over 2000 visitors each day, is easily understood. The city's original name, as well as information about daily life during its heyday, is largely not available, also giving the site an air of mystery.

Located high up in the mountains, this Inca city is difficult to reach via car. Taking one of three trains departing from the nearby city of Cuzco is the easiest way to get there, and flights regularly depart to Cuzco from the country's capital of Lima.
