Sylhet is located in northeastern Bangladesh, situated on the right bank of the Surma River. It is a crucial city in the Surma River valley, well-connected by road and rail to Comilla, Chhatak, and Habiganj.
Established as a municipality in 1878, Sylhet is home to Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, and several other government colleges. Historically, Sylhet was the capital of the 14th-century Raja Gaur Gobind and later served as a significant Muslim cultural center. Notable historic sites include the Shah Jalal Mosque and the tombs of various Muslim saints.
The city is renowned for its cane products and is a producer of tea, fertilizer, and liquefied petroleum gas (propane). Sylhet has several handicraft cottage industries, such as mat weaving and bamboo work. The majority of Bangladesh's tea yield comes from the tea estates southeast of Sylhet.
Osmani International Airport, the third largest airport in Bangladesh, is situated in Sylhet and managed by the Civil Aviation Authority, Bangladesh (CAAB). It operates both international and domestic flights to various destinations and is located 9 km from Sylhet city center. Transportation to the airport includes private cars, buses, rickshaws, and taxis.
Private car travel takes approximately 20 minutes via the airport road, with varying times due to traffic. Bus rides are the most economical option, though navigating the buses with Bengali writing may be challenging for non-locals. Rickshaws are a safer and cheaper alternative to taxis, but bargaining is necessary. Taxis are available but tend to have slightly higher fares in Sylhet compared to other cities in Bangladesh. Negotiating for a more affordable fare is advised, and solo taxi use is not recommended.
