Bratislava is a historic city along the Danube River which continues to preserve the architecture of the Middle Ages. Bratislava, Slovakia's capital city, is the most developed city in the country with regards to economy and culture.
If you want to visit this city, you can travel to Bratislava Milan Rastislav Stefanik Airport (Bratislava Airport). If you wish you can also reach the city from Vienna International Airport. There is a distance of about 40 kilometers from Vienna Airport to Bratislava. In the historic area of the city there are two big squares named Hlavne Namestie (main square) and Hviezdoslav Namestie (Hviezdoslav Square). The central railway station, called Hlavná Stanica, is located a fifteen to twenty minute walk north of the city center.
In Bratislava, the trains are only used for intercity or international journeys. The central bus station of the city is called Autobusová Stanica. There are six large stations in the city, named Trnavské mýto, Račianske mýto, Patrónka, Bratislava hlavná stanica, Zochova and Mlynské Nivy, all of which are meant to be transfer points of public transport. Many people prefer to travel on foot in some parts of the city.
Especially, the central part of the city is very small. You can fold the entire square within a few minutes. Those who consider going out of the city center can alternatively take trams, buses or trolleybuses. There is a large public transport network in the city; however, buses can sometimes move very slowly, especially since the majority of vehicles are outdated.
Public transport prices are more affordable than in Europe. If you buy a standard ticket, it will be valid for fifteen minutes after your first use. Preferably, it is possible to buy tickets that are valid for one hour during weekdays and one and a half hour during weekends and holidays. The fees for these tickets are not much different from standard tickets.
If you plan to stay in the city for a long time, it will also be economical to buy from special tickets that are valid for one, two, three or seven days. We remind you that after you get on the vehicle, you have to validate your ticket at the machines. The drivers do not sell tickets. So you have to buy your tickets before you get on the ride. You can purchase your tickets from purchasing machines on many stations or by SMS.
Within the city, buses and trams depart from three main points: Hodžovo námestie, connection point for buses in the northwest and east direction, Poštová, the main station for trams and Most SNP the connection point for buses moving in the south and west direction.
Many of the public transport services are available between 04:30 in the morning and 23:30 in the evening. There is no special shuttle service to the airport. If you are thinking of traveling to the terminal by public transport, the only option is the bus. If you prefer to have a more comfortable ride, you can take a taxi or rent a car.
Traveling by bus to the airport is a very practical and affordable option. Bus number 61, which runs from the central railway station, gives you access to the terminal. If you are planning to go to the airport after midnight, you can take advantage of the night bus N61, which travels along the same route.
Depending on the area you are in, you can also take these buses from Trnavské mýto, the main transfer point or Racianské Mýto, station where you can transfer to the trams. There is no direct service from the central bus station to the airport. If you want to reach the airport from this point, you can go to the trolleybus number 205, from here you can transfer to the bus number 96 to Slovinská, to reach bus number 61.
Buses are also frequently used in urban transportation. There are seventy buses in the city operating during the day, and seventeen buses operating after midnight.
It is not possible to reach the airport directly by tram. However, you can use the tram to make a transfer to bus number 61. Within the city, there are eight tram lines. With these lines you can travel between border regions and central stations such as Ružinov - Astronomická, Zlaté piesky, Zlaté piesky, Dúbravka - Pri kríži, ŽST Nové Mesto and Karlova Ves.
It is possible to use trolleybuses to go to the central train station where you can transfer to go to the airport. As is the case of trams and buses, the trolleybuses also have a large network within the city. There are fourteen lines of trolleybuses operating during the day and three lines operating at night.
Renting a car is a good option for a comfortable trip. There are many car rental offices located in the city. You can rent your car from these offices, or you can book online before your flight.
Taking a taxi is also a comfortable alternative to get to the airport. If you call the taxi by phone, you can travel far more affordably than a taxi you will get from the street. If you come across an unofficial, black taxi in town, we recommend you not to take it. These charge fare over normal prices especially from tourists.
Bratislava Airport is located 9 kilometers north-east of the city center. This airport is also regarded as the main air terminal of Slovakia. There are various options for you to have a good time at the airport. In Eat & Fly and Bistro Airport restaurants you will find quality and delicious food.
You can also visit the Coffee Shop Company or Vollare Bar in the Shengen section of the departure terminal. You can take advantage of the Business Lounge and private meeting rooms at the airport.
You can buy many high-quality products at affordable prices from the Duty Free Shop on the departure terminal. In the terminal you will also find a number of newspaper dealers.
