Cluj-Napoca is the unofficial capital of the Transylvania province. Located in the Somesul Mic River valley, the city is one of Romania’s most important tourist destinations. After Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca is Romania’s second largest city. With its architecture, landscaping, and ambience, Cluj-Napoca is a well-preserved historic city. Known as Koloşvar during the Ottoman era, Cluj-Napoca is located in the northwest of the country. The city’s establishment dates back to the Roman Empire; it gained ‘city’ status in the 2^nd century AD. The city got its name in the 12^th century from Castrum Clus, meaning ‘closed place’ in Latin.

Since the city was within the Austro-Hungarian Empire borders for many years there is a very large Hungarian population. The city’s biggest architectural icon is the St. Michael’s Church located in the city’s main square, Union Square. Among the city’s main tourist sights to see are the Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral, Matthias Corvinus House, the Banffy Castle, National Theatre, Botanical Garden, Central Park, the Pharmacy Museum, Ethnographic Museum of Transylvania, and Romulus Vuia ethnographical park. The city has a cold and temperate climate with significant rainfall in the summer and winter months. The Cluj International Airport is located 9 km east of the city.
