Transportation to Airport from Dakar City Center
Leopold Sedar Senghor Intl. Airport
In the city where the rail transport system is not available, the only public transport alternative is the bus to get to the airport from the city center. You can reach the airport by bus only during the day as it does not serve at night.
You can rent a car from the city center, use hotel shuttle or take a taxi to get to the airport in about half an hour in normal traffic conditions. Private shuttle services are another convenient alternative.
Airport Shuttle Service
These private shuttle services, which operate with car rental logic, take you from your address and leave you at the airport gate. In order to benefit from this service, it is absolutely necessary to make a reservation in advance. You can ask your hotel to help you with the reservation. This service costs a little bit more than normal taxi.
Bus
You can reach the airport by bus number 8, which can be accessed from the city center. This bus line operates between 06:00 and 21:00. Since bus is the only public transport you can use to get to the airport, it is not possible to get to the airport by public transport from the city center if your flight is at night.
Hotel Shuttle
You should learn in advance whether your hotel offers this service and make a reservation. With the hotel shuttle you will be picked up right in front of your hotel at the most convenient time and you will have a very comfortable means of transportation to reach the airport.
Taxi
Cars that work as a taxi in Dakar are quite old, but they are often preferred for fast and cheap transportation. You should definitely negotiate a good deal about the fare beforehand with your driver. You can get information about an average rate from your hotel and ask there for a taxi call. So you do not have to worry about the amount you will pay. You can reach the airport from the city center in a half hour by taxi.
Car Rental
You can rent a car suitable for your budget by contacting the car rental offices located in the city center. You can find both extremely cheap as well as luxury car options. If you are renting the car only for the last day to get to the airport, it is a convenience to ask for a car with a driver. The hotel you are staying at can also help you about car rental.
Airport Information
The airport in Dakar's northern district is named after Léopold Sédar Senghor, Senegal's first president. The public also refer to the airport as Dakar Yoff Airport, with the airport’s former name. International flights as well as charter flights and cargo flights are organized from the airport. Dakar Léopold Sédar Senghor International Airport offers only basic services.
A new airport is being built as an alternative to the airport, which cannot satisfy its guests both in terms of capacity and facilities. There is no clear information on when the airport, whose construction started in 2007, will be opened.
