About Liberia

Liberia, officially known as the Republic of Liberia, is one of the oldest republics on West Africa's coast. It shares borders with Sierra Leone and Guinea to the north, Ivory Coast to the east, and the Atlantic Ocean to the south and west. The Portuguese discovered Liberia in the 16th century, and its modern history started in 1821 when slaves arrived in Monrovia from the United States.
Liberia has a rich history of hosting different tribes, leading to a diverse mix of ethnic groups today. It is considered Africa's most stable state and holds the honor of being the first African country elected to the United Nations Security Council in 1960. Located between Ivory Coast and Sierra Leone, Liberia is divided into 15 administrative regions.
With a population of approximately 5 million, Liberia consists mainly of two groups: the tribal population and descendants of settlers from the United States, known as Americo-Liberians. Despite English being the official language, each tribe has its local language.
The official currency used in the country, with Monrovia as its capital, is the Liberian dollar. Another significant city for the country's finance, trade, and tourism sectors is Buchanan. Rich in mineral deposits, Liberia is the leading producer of iron ore in Africa, mined since 1950. The country also generates substantial income from diamond and gold mines.
The economy heavily relies on the mining sector, with agriculture and forestry playing a significant role as well. Liberia's economy is based on its rich minerals, including agricultural products such as coffee, cocoa, dates, rice, palm oil, sugarcane, bananas, citrus fruits, rubber, and cola nuts.
In the coastal areas, Liberia experiences a hot and humid climate, with an average annual temperature of around 27 degrees Celsius. However, due to winds from the Sahara, temperatures can drop to 10 degrees Celsius in January. The period between November and April is known for the highest rainfall, while in the inland areas, rainy seasons are shorter, and nights are colder.
Liberia has a tropical climate, leading to hot and humid summers, with temperatures often reaching 40 degrees Celsius in February and March. The coolest temperatures, averaging around 15 degrees Celsius, are typically experienced in August.
Liberia offers a rich and diverse cuisine, featuring flavors like shawarma, hummus, and falafel. The country, known for its fish and seafood comparable to island nations, has the famous Snapper, resembling sea bass, as a preferred choice. Additionally, lobster, flounder, barracuda, and other seafood offer unique and delightful tastes.
