It is the second largest city in Libya. It is the capital of the Eastern Libyan region. It is located on the banks of the Sirte Bay on the Mediterranean coast. The city is named after a religious and helpful person named 'Gazi' who died in 1450. The city, which was called "Beni Gazi" in the first times, came up to today with the name of "Benghazi". The city, which was established during the Ancient Greek period in 525 BC, referred to as 'Eusperides’ in the first written documents of Herodotus. Thanks to its harbor, it is one of the cities with strong economy in Libya. Food, processed salt, construction materials, finance and textile are the most developed sectors in the city.
Benghazi, an important Afro-Greek settlement in antiquity, was under Hellenic, Carthaginian, Roman and Ottoman domination respectively, and it became a colony of Italy in recent history. Pentapolis, with five ancient Greek cities, is located on the coastline between Benghazi and Tobruk. The remains of Tokra, Tulmey, Cyrene and Apollina, which make up Pentapolis, are still standing today. There are no remaining from Barke. Pentapolis attracts the attention of cultural and historical tourism enthusiasts. The antique works of the region are exhibited at the Cyrene Museum. The city, which was left to Italy by the 1912 Treaty of Ushi, stayed under Ottoman rule for many years. Reşit Pasha Mosque and Jami al Kabir (Great Mosque) are the most important Ottoman works in the city where the Ottoman traces are clearly visible. However, these structures suffered a great deal of damage due to recent civil war and conflicts. Pentapolis, El Muntazah Park, El Funduq Marketplace, Old Town Hall, Liberty Square and Jebel Akhdar are the main tourist attractions of the city. Libya's most popular tourist attraction, Ras el Hilal, is located very close to Benghazi. Benghazi is under the effect of a steppe climate, thus it receives a small amount of rainfall. Benina International Airport is 19 kilometers east from the center of Benghazi city.
