About Easter Island
4000 kilometres off the coast is Chile is Easter Island, known by the local inhabitants as Rapa Nui. This triangle-shaped island has a small populaton of only 3,000 and is mainly dependent on tourism. Located far away from mainland Chile, it became an international touristic destination thanks to the mystery of the statues called moai, which were first rediscovered and excavated in the 1970s. There are over 600 such colossal statues on the island today, with many theories about what purpose they were built for. It is these statues that attract the interest of both scholars and tourists alike.
The coasts of the island, however, have very few swimable beaches. The shore of the nearby Twin or Anakena Island have the best beaches in the area . As a closed ecosystem it is also not possible to bring your pet onto the istland. The island may be reached by Mataveri International Airport, which has flights to and from the cities of mainland Chile, and also by a boat voyage as the island is home to a sizable port.
