The military base, which was constructed for the United Britain Air Forces in 1916, was put in service as Turnhouse Airport. In 1947, the first commercial and civil flights were executed from the airport, which continued to be used for military purposes until the Second World War came to an end. The airport was named as Edinburgh Airport and executed its first international flight in 1962; after 1977, it started serving the passengers with its new terminal building.
