Kahta is a charming mountain district in Southeastern Anatolia, Turkey. Kahta is the ideal starting point to visit the famous Mount Nemrut, the site of an archeological marvel on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Every year thousands of tourists climb to Nemrut’s 2,000-meter summit to see the stunning ten-meter-high statues and tomb Antiochus, which date back to the Hellenistic period. Limestone deities, lions and eagles guard the regal crypt. Built by the dynasty of Commagene, the figures’ intricate design and huge scale were unequaled at the time. The aesthetic and architectural accomplishment demonstrates a unique blend of Greek, Persian and Anatolian cultures, and has even been called the 8th wonder of the ancient world. Guided daytrips from Kahta center and the nearby city of Adıyaman carry visitors to the site, stopping at other fascinating spots en route. Tourists can photograph the breathtaking sunset on the huge, awe-inspiring monuments, as well as purchase miniature versions of the statues in souvenir shops.
Several other must-see historical sites lie along the way from the town of Kahta to Mount Nemrut. Old Kahta Castle is a towering fortress built by the people of Commagene in the 13th century. One of its most interesting features are the messenger pigeon towers. A climb to the top of the fort affords visitors a great view of the ancient remains. Just 2 km from the castle, the ice-cold waters of Değirmenbaşı retain their glacial temperatures even in the summer, providing an ideal rest spot to cool off. The ancient Roman Cendere Bridge and the Devil Bridge are two other structures worth seeing. Thanks in part to the introduction of the Atatürk Dam Lake, the mountainous region of Kahta enjoys a warm Mediterranean climate that makes it an enjoyable destination year-round. Frequent busses run from the large city of Adıyaman, just 30 km away. Visitors can fly into Adıyaman Airport from other cities in Turkey.
