About Kirkuk

Kirkuk is the capital of the Kirkuk Governorate in Iraq. The city, located in the northern part of the country, is an old Ottoman city. Kirkuk is located 236 km north of the Iraqi capital Baghdad and 83 km south of Erbil. The city’s landmarks include Kirkuk Citadel, Tomb of Daniel, the Qishla of Kirkuk, the market Bazari Pirehmerd, and the archeological sites at Yorgan Tepe and Jarmo. Kirkuk is the site of 5,000 year-old ruins that date back to the ancient city of Arrapha, located by the Khasa River. Kurds, Turkmens, Arabs, and Assyrians live in Kirkuk, a city that has a wealth of history and culture. In 2010 the Iraqi Ministry named Kirkuk the ‘capital of Iraqi culture’.

Kirkuk is home to many structures that bear the traces of Ottoman architecture. One of these is the Qishla of Kirkuk, built in 1863, which the Institution of Cultural Heritage plans to transform into a museum. Outside of the city, in the southwest, is the archaeological site of Yorgan Tepe, also known as Nuzi, which features the intriguing ruins of a palace, with rooms situated around a courtyard, and tablets that date back to 1896. Kirkuk offers tourists a unique perspective on culture and history.

Kirkuk air transportation is provided by Erbil International Airport or Sulaymaniyah International Airport. Kirkuk is approximately an hour and 45-minute drive by car from the Erbil International Airport and an hour and 50-minute drive by car from the Sulaymaniyah International Airport. There is only 1 flight per week from London to Sulaymaniyah and it takes at least 5 hours. Flights from London to Erbil have at least one layover and take at least 7 hours. Flights from New York to Erbil have at least 1 layover and take at least 14 hours. Flights from New York to Sulaymaniyah have at least 1 layover and take at least 17 hours.

Kirkuk is a small city situated in the Kurdistan Region in the north of Iraq. Kirkuk Airport is no longer provides transportation because of the political problems in Kirkuk. Those who want to visit the city can fly to Sulaymaniyah International Airport, which is located in the city of Sulaymaniyah, and then reach Kirkuk by choosing from a few transportation options.

Transportation from Sulaymaniyah Airport to Kirkuk

It takes about one and a half hours from Sulaymaniyah Airport to Kirkuk. Neither public transportation nor car rental option is provided to reach Kirkuk city center because of the political turmoil in the city.

Taxi

You may have difficulty finding a taxi at the airport. If you prefer the taxi-share alternative with other passengers, you can find a taxi in a shorter time. Especially if you agree with the passengers who are going to Erbil, you can ask them to drop you off in Kirkuk.

Direct taxi transportation to Kirkuk may not be an affordable option. However, long-distance taxi services, at the least, are provided at more affordable rates compared to the standard tariff. If you prefer taxi transportation, it will be a safer journey for you.
