About Negombo

Negombo, which is a calm city on the western coast of Sri Lanka, is defined as a perfect combination of the deep-blue sea and sky. The city, which is located 35 kilometers of Colombo, located near the Negombo Lake and one of the most crowded cities of Sri Lanka, takes its name from the Portuguese ruling the city in the 17th century. The city, which was an important port in cinnamon trade in the 17th and 18th centuries, still maintains its characteristics about this trade. You can find vanilla and cinnamon in many small shops in the city. Negombo, which was controlled by the Portuguese, Dutch and British in its history, is mentioned as “Little Rome” due to being predominantly a catholic area dotted with many ancient Roman Catholic churches. St. Mary’s Church, which has a pink-colored exterior surface and wonderful ceiling paintings, is the most important church to visit in the city. This church was built in 1874 and is among the largest cathedrals in Sri Lanka.

Daily transportation in the city, which is the first holiday center of Sri Lanka, is provided by canoes and modern water crafts. The city is equipped with a 100 meters long canal network. The most prominent activities of the region are fishing and crab hunting. The biggest fish market called “Lellama” located in the north of the city and Muthurajawela March which is home to 192 types of wild life are among the places to visit in Negombo.

You can enjoy diving or any water sports for discovering the underwater life on the untouched beaches along the Indian Ocean coast of Negombo. You can also join boat tours. Bandaranaike International Airport is located 7 kilometers of the city. You can reach Negombo city center by using the buses or taxis departing from the airport.
