Patna, historically known as Pataliputra, is the capital city of Bihar state in northern India. It is located approximately 470 kilometers northwest of Kolkata (Calcutta). Patna holds the distinction of being one of the oldest cities in India, and during the Mughal period, it was known as Azimabad.
Situated along the south bank of the Ganges (Ganga) River, Patna stretches for about 19 kilometers. To the west of the old city is the area known as Bankipur, and further southwest lies a spacious new capital district characterized by wide roads, shaded avenues, and modern buildings. Among Patna's notable landmarks are the Government House, the Assembly Chambers, the Oriental Library, a medical college, and an engineering college. The city's historic landmarks include the mosque of Ḥusayn Shah of Bengal (1499), the Sikh Temple associated with the 10th Guru, Gobind Singh, and the granary at Bankipur (1786), commonly referred to as the Golghar. Patna is also home to the University of Patna (established in 1917) and the Patna Museum. The city is connected to Hajipur, just north of the Ganges, via the Mahatma Gandhi Bridge across the river.
Patna Airport, also known as Jaiprakash Narayan Airport, is located in the state of Bihar. Established in 1973, it operates numerous flights, especially domestic flights across India.
