About Zapopan

Zapopan, which comes from the word “tzapotl” meaning citrus fruit, is also known as corn village since it is an important corn producer. The city, which is located in Mexican state of Jalisco, is the second biggest settlement after Guadalajara. Zapopan is one of the important tourist destinations with its architecture, museums and natural areas. The places that you should add to your visit list include geothermal areas, "Ixcatan Geyers", "La Cola de Caballo" waterfall or Horsetail Falls (about 30 meters), "Rio Caliente de la Primavera" (Hot Spring River), "Bosque de la Primavera" (Spring Forest) and El Centinela.

You should visit "Cañon de las Flores" (Flower Canyon), Los Camachos, San Jose, Las Tinajitas and Santa Rita hot springs in order to spend relaxing time especially in the summer months. If you want to spend time in the nature, you can go for a walk in Sumida and Los Colomos Park or have a picnic on lakeside. The Virgin of Zapopan, which was made by the local artists in Michoacan in the early of 16th century, is a sculpture that is accepted as the symbol of the city. You should definitely visit this sculpture which is believed to protect the city. Another landmark is the Arco de Ingreso a Zapopan. This arch is a work of art decorated with sculptures. You can walk around in Paseo Teopiltzintli by entering the city from here. You can also see the sculptures belonging to the Egyptian gods and goddesses of Zapopan by walking on the Plaza de las Americas street. You should also visit the Zapopan Basilica which has been standing since 1690. In Tonala, where you can find many products such as pots, handmade glassware and miniatures, you can visit the market set up on Sundays and buy special gifts from the shops run by families. You can also enjoy visiting the market where you can find antique items.

The basic food source of Zapopan, where you can try the tastes from the Mexican cuisine, is corn. Steak, pork and fish are among the most preferred meat products in the tables flavored with Tortilla. For vegetarians, a wide variety of exotic fruits and vegetables are among the options. You should also try tequila that accompanies each meal with an elegant presentation. The best time to visit Zapopan is between October and June.
