The city of Galway, the central city of Connacht Province in Ireland, is located on the shores of the Gaillimh River and means "Stone Ground". The city was founded by 14 merchant families, and as such is nicknamed "City of Tribes". Galway, the third largest city in the Republic of Ireland, has a population of about 71,000 people according to 2006 data. In a city with a slightly humid, mild and fluctuating climate all year round, temperatures do not fall below 0 degrees but do not rise above 30 degrees. Frequent rainy weather is seen throughout the year. The most rainy months are from October to December.
