About Port Sudan

Port Sudan is Sudan's main seaport, situated on the Red Sea coast about 475 kilometers northeast of the Nile River valley. Constructed between 1905 and 1909 to replace the historic port of Sawākin, it features a petroleum refinery, an international airport, and modern docking facilities, serving as the primary hub for Sudan's external trade.
The harbor has a coral-free channel, and its imports consist of machinery, vehicles, fuel oil, and building materials. Chief exports include cotton, gum arabic, oilseeds, hides and skins, and senna. An 850-kilometer oil pipeline connects Port Sudan to Khartoum since 1977.
The city has a near-desert climate, obtaining fresh water from Wadi Arbaʿāt in the Red Sea Hills and desalination plants. The population is mainly Arab or Nubian Sudanese, with indigenous Beja, West Africans, and small minorities of Asians and Europeans.
