About Vologda

City of Vologda is located between Russia’s two most important cities, St. Petersburg and Moscow. The city have become a major transfer and loading hub of the country thanks to the development of transportation on Vologda river with the railway between the two cities; and it is considered as a major light industrial city with its lumber production, furniture production, pulp, paper and lumber processing plants. Regarded as the most important city in the west till the foundation of St. Petersburg, Vologda is now considered as one of the country’s most important historical cities. Vologda put 193 buildings in the country’s cultural heritage list and it is also home to 16 of the 116 wooden buildings that made into the country’s cultural heritage list.

Particularly famous for the Vologda Kremlin Square, the city also stands out with the Saint Sophia Cathedral, Konstantin and Elena Church, Spaso-Prilutsky Monastery, Stone Bridge and Revolyutsii Square. Apart from its historical buildings, Vologda is also famous for its linen, lace and related products and butter, which are considered as the major souvenirs. In addition to the railway and river transport, there is also an airport in the city 8 kilometers away from the city centre, where daily flights are made to the St. Petersburg or Moscow.
